Helping students achieve their
potential in Number

OPTiMaths is an online tool that helps students achieve greater outcomes through purposeful activities which follow a clear learning progression.

OPTiMaths incorporates pedagogical strategies, settings and language that aligns with Professor Bob Wright's Learning Framework in Number.

Learning Progressions across eight
domains of Number

Tailored to students from Foundation to Year 4, each activity targets a specific learning intention through a maximum of 25 tasks designed to promote progressive mathematisation. Each task is designed to take 15 - 20 minutes to complete with 95% success required for mastery.

The learning progression promotes Progressive Mathematisation through:

Complexifying tasks

Throughout each domain and each activity, tasks are developed to make them more complex eg from counting forwards to counting backwards, from adding a single 10 to adding multiple 10s, from adding within ten to adding by bridging 10, from division without a remainder to division with a remainder.

Distancing the setting

Settings such as the arithmetic rack, five and ten frames, bundling sticks, and arrays are used to support learning. Within activities, scaffolding is reduced from unscreened materials, to flashed materials to bare number tasks.

Strategic use of colour

Once students are confidently counting on and back, OPTiMaths focuses on the use of grouping, or non-count-by-ones strategies to solve tasks. Colour is an important strategy used to support these more efficient strategies.

Feedback and Reporting

Each activity focuses on a specific learning intention.
OPTiMaths can be used as an assessment for, as or of learning to meet the needs of the individual school.

Feedback for students

Feedback is provided to students at the question and activity level.
Students can also view their overall OPTiMaths profile through the MyData portal.

Reporting

The MyData feature allows teachers to drill down into student data by: domain, activity, specific question, student and cohort level.
The MyData feature allows school leaders to view results according to cohort, class, individual student and at domain and question level.
The MyData feature allows for students to see at a glance the activities which have been assigned to them, and which have been successfully completed.
They can also access their own results at the question level.

Loved by students and teachers

It was fun and easy to learn with! We all wanted to get more and more smiley faces.
Sophie
Student
We use OPTiMaths from Foundation to Year 4 at our school and there are some students in Years 5 and 6 who are also benefitting from it. We love it because it reinforces exactly what we are teaching in our Mathematics lessons. It is easy to set students specific tasks and to monitor their progress.
Anna Side
Maths Leader
I like how you started on different numbers and not just 1. I also like how you got more than one chance before it reset you.
Lachlan
Student
I think it was good because there were lots of levels that you wanted to complete which made it addictive.
Jemima
Student
It is fun and at the same time it teaches you more.
Elian
Student
OPTiMaths aligns perfectly with the pedagogical approaches we are trying to embed into our Maths program. It has provided a wonderful stimulus for professional discussions about the teaching and learning of Number.

Maths Leader
